Special ED. Songs
My songs of conscience and wonder give voice to the beauty and mystery of life on Earth. Special Ed. Songs advocates for and celebrates the resilience and dignity of students who are outcast, marginalized, stigmatized, traumatized. It urges us to revision, to reconceive and to reimagine each other as ‘each other,’ instead of as ‘the other.’ Through narrative, anecdote, story and song, it reveals the pathos, humor, sensitivity, beauty, and unique genius of kids classified as Special Ed.. Students who grin and bear, and oftentimes oppose and disrupt the demands and regimentation of compulsory schooling teach us that our current fixes don’t even treat the symptoms of our educational problems. We’ve put the cart of head work before the horse of heart work. Special Ed. Songs peals the scab off wounded learners in order to heal the trauma beneath their vulnerability and self-destructive behaviors and inspires us to look deeply into the unintended harm we casue children in school when we don’t infuse our pedagogical relationships with love and kindness.
In the words of one of my songs, Explosion of Love,
…we need an explosion of love to heal the world…
